Industrial Biotechnology is defined as the technology where living cells or their components and enzymes are used for the manufacture of industrial products or services. Similarly Environmental Biotechnology is defined as the technology where living cells or their components and enzymes are used for the treatment of industrial effluents and other waste to the render them safe for disposal into the environment. Recent major scientific advances have greatly enhanced our understanding of and ability to manipulate biological systems, opening up potential for industrial exploitation of biotechnology.
