OBJECTIVES
OF NBBnet
- To provide the
necessary infrastructure and resources for bioinformatics and biotechnology
information.
- To provide national
biotechnology information on Research and Development (R&D), Human
Resource Development (HRD) and commercialisation available to researchers
and industry.
- To provide bioinformatics
tools and resources such as databases, software, network communication,
training and consultancy.
- To promote the
development of research programme, competence and software in computational
biology.
GOALS OF NBBnet
- To have a biotechnology
community that are proficient in the application of bioinformatics
and biotechnology information using advanced technologies.
- To provide the
platform for the promotion and advancement of the national biotechnology
programme.
STRUCTURE OF NBBnet
NBBnet is multidisciplinary comprising of users that have common interest
in biotechnology and related fields. The philosophy underlying NBBnet
is an operational mechanism to facilitate interaction between universities,
research institutions, government policy makers and industry with the
objectives of enhancing R&D activities, HRD and commercialisation
of biotechnology opportunities.
NBBnet will be established as a distributed network comprising:
- NBBnet
coordinating center or clearing house to be located at MOSTE. The
coordinating centre will be jointly managed by NBD/MASTIC while NBD
will act as the secretariat.
- Specialized centers
(to be located at the BCCs in an identified institution)
- Users centers
to be established by universities and research institutions for specific
purposes.
- The Users comprising
the biotechnology and related communities.
- Such a design
is thought to be scientifically and economically practical as workload
can be distributed amongst collaborating centers. Each center will
define its intellectual property rights, ownership of data and access
to them, in addition to being flexible in accommodating existing and
future needs of each centre.
FUNCTION OF NBBnet
- To
coordinate the activity of NBBnet Coordinating Center (NCC) with other
centers.
- To
develop information storage and data retrieval system.
- To
provide biotechnology information relating to R&D, commercialization,
training, policy and regulation.
- To
provide mirroring information from other sites.
- To
conduct research and training.
- To develop database
and software.
